I should be happy about today's accomplishment. I've completed the Individual storyboard. The problem is, I don't think I'll be able to get the blogger site to bend to my wishes. In fact, I don't think I'll even come close. And that's not good. Because now I've seen it. I've dreamed it up and put it to paper. So some half-assed version isn't going to make me happy.
There's another problem. Blogger will only allow you to add up to 10 pages to your site. I wanted each individual ancestor to have their own page. Needless to say, there are more than 10 of them. Shitballs.
Then there's navigation. I still need to figure out how the user navigates from person to person. Each ancestor will have an abbreviated tree in their "Who" section (parents and children only). Will the names in said tree be hyperlinks? Dunno. And how does one get from the home page to an individual? Or even from a Surname page to an individual? Is it just a giant list of names? Other genealogy sites have lists, but they're pretty lame. So what's my creative solution? No idea.
Finally: Proof. I'd love to post some of my source documentation (census docs, baptism records, city directories, etc.). Where will that go? And who can access it? Can I password protect that element so that I'm not giving away the store? Dunno.
Are you sold? Can you see why I took one step forward but feel 10 steps back? To avoid uber frustration that leads to abandonment, I shall set one, attainable goal for Day Three: Research other free blog/family tree providers to find one that will work. Failing that, start pep-talking myself into building my own website.
Oh boy.
