Sunday Paper Teaser

I'm thrilled to finally launch this new column! Each Sunday, I'll post a newspaper article about one of our ancestors. Although occasionally an obituary may appear, our ancestors were "out there" enough that we should be able to glimpse into their published lives for more than just the end scene.

The plan is to re-publish the articles alone as they appeared in their original publications. However, I'll provide exposition when necessary to either set the historical scene or to explain who the ancestors are and how they relate to the living.

Generally, articles will not connect from week-to-week; we'll jump all over the family tree and all over the place as far as topic is concerned. But, we're kicking the column off with a series!

The first six weeks or so will cover the less-than-legal antics of James Monroe Klinck.  Follow the hyperlink to view a family tree highlighting Monroe and providing a little bit of background on his life.

You might also want to refresh on what was known previously about Monroe from the pages of the Daily Appeal by re-reading Marauding Monroe.

I believe that this is a photograph of Monroe. It was discovered along with several other Klinck family photographs in the home of Mary E. Klinck Grader, Monroe's sister. The photography type and age of the subject line up with Monroe's age when he was enlisted in the 21st Tennessee Infantry (15-16). Beyond this, we have a lot of "gut instinct." Anyone who knew Paul Monroe Klinck (Monroe's great grandson) during the 1960s will tell you that this could be a photograph of Paul. There is a Strong familial resemblance!

Tune in on Sunday for the shocking first installment of Sunday Paper.

Likely to be James Monroe Klinck, circa 1863
