What I Know:
Here are two more from Emma Johnson Ferrer's photo album. With these, the question isn't just "What's your name?" But also, "Is this the same man?"
As shown in the side-by-side below, the similarities are almost too great to contemplate. But, there are fathers and sons who are almost uncannily similar. So is it more likely that a father and son look so much alike ... or that one photo album holds pictures of a man 10-15 years apart in age? The quality of the images seems similar; one isn't dramatically sharper than the other as you might expect in a newer photograph.
Investigating the clothing didn't help much either. Both men are dressed in a fashion typical of post-Civil War Southern gentlemen. The ribbon neck tie, known as a plantation tie, was prevalent in the South where it was simply too hot to wear lace or silk cravats.
Finally, I'm intrigued by the photo of the older gentleman because his companion (son?) has his hand resting on his leg. It's so familiar and intimate - especially for the time.
