In 1861, Hayne Klinck and his partner, Dyer, traveled all the way to Louisville, KY to capture and arrest a theif named McManus.
While a Memphis to Louisville trip might not seem like much by today's standards, Klinck and Dyer likely traveled by horseback. If a horse carrying gear and a rider covers less than 20 miles per day and it's 384 miles to Louisville, the officers spent more than a month simply traveling back and forth. (The L&R Railroad had a line between Memphis and Bowling Green, but it wouldn't begin carrying passengers until April of 1861.)
